Crete

The colonel stayed on the beach alone and waited until Troy was far enough away before he placed a call on the sat phone he removed from his back pocket.

Five thousand three hundred miles away, a person in a nondescript office building in Fairfax, Virginia, answered on the third ring. “What can I do for you, sir?”

“What type of assets do we have in the Houston area?” The colonel asked.

The line fell silent as the person looked at a file on his laptop. It took over a minute before the response arrived. A dull static sound filled the void. “Multiple types, but it depends. What do you need?”

“Access to a lab.”

“What kind?”

“One that can process a DNA sample.”

“Hold, please.” The static sound returned for close to a minute. “Houston has several labs that should suffice. I can activate an asset there within minutes. Where’s the sample?”

“A private home in West University Place.”

A couple of seconds of silence passed as the person on the other end consulted their Google Maps. “There’s a lab near the Galleria.”

“Perfect.” The colonel provided more specific details.

On the other end of the phone, the person made copious notes.

“Send your asset to the address I’m about to text you.” The colonel took the phone away from his ear and texted the location.

“Got it,” the person said.

“I’ll need the test results returned in less than twelve hours. Can you arrange that?”

A sarcastic tone replaced the even keeled voice so far on the call. The person replied, “Well, sure, I’m a miracle worker, after all.”

“Drop the attitude and make it happen,” the colonel said in a terse tone. “This is important. Call me with the results as soon as you have them.”

“Yes, sir,” the person said.

“And keep this between us. No one else needs to know.”

“Understood.”

The line went dead.

Glenn’s wife was not home. She flew to Santa Barbara with several of her friends the day before. The stress of the abduction made her decide to leave the house while Glenn traveled overseas. With nobody home, the asset could slip in, retrieve the finger, and get out. After the call ended, the colonel placed the phone back in his pocket and drew in a deep breath. The tropical breeze and distinct smell of the ocean breeze filled his lungs and slowed his elevated pulse.
